The Noor Al Hussein Foundation (NHF) just completed a 12-month project entitled, "Strengthening the capacity of Community based Organizations (CBOs) as Models in Good Governance Practices," in cooperation with the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA).

On Thursday, April 26, 2012 75 participants from eight selected CBOs in Aqaba graduated after completing 50 hours of training on good governance practices and 50 hours of training in human resources, financial management, and interpersonal skills.

The approach for this program included training, coaching and monitoring.

Two of the eight CBOs are lead by women and the others have women on their board of directors.

"We have applied good governance practices to our daily work which reflected positively on our employees' administrative and financial skills," remarked Nisreen Neimat from the Jordan National Forum for Women.  "We are now able to strategically plan every project we wish to embark on."  Neimat said that they also plan to transfer the knowledge they have gained from Aqaba to other governorates.

"I recommend that good governance should be the starting point of every new administration," said Shadia Al Rousan from Al Sahel Ladies Association.  "The good governance practices which we have learned are considered a passport to our association's success and to building partnerships with other associations."

The overall goal of the 12-month project was to help the members of the board of directors of the CBOs and its members develop model CBOs whose administration is characterized by transparency and accountability.

"Good governance helps CBOs to manage their associations in a more efficient and transparent manner.  These two approaches help the CBOs to deliver their services more effectively to the communities they serve," remarked Hana Shahin, Executive Director of the King Hussein Foundation.  "At the same time, the CBOs gain the trust of all their stakeholders."
