TIMELINE

During King Hussein's 47-year reign he improved the standard of living for all Jordanians, expanded Jordan’s labor force to build its economy, promoted human rights and the protection of refugees while navigating the country through regional and global conflicts and recessions. King Hussein was a passionate believer in the power and potential of each citizen to contribute to Jordan’s development and progress. The marriage of King Hussein and Queen Noor marked the beginning of a partnership that would see them working side by side to advance national development and regional peacebuilding. This is where our journey began, four decades ago.

Upon her marriage, Queen Noor, a trained architect and urban planner, embraced her role as a public servant and applied a planner’s integrated problem-solving approach to learning about the needs of different sectors in the country and, addressing the emerging needs of the country, through sustainable development models in the areas of education, women and youth empowerment, integrated community development, human rights, and environmental conservation.

These initiatives grew into development programs in the late 1970s which led to the establishment of the Noor Al Hussein Foundation (NHF) in 1985 and, subsequently, the King Hussein Foundation (KHF) in 1999 which Queen Noor founded and chairs. Today, the King Hussein Foundation encompasses the Jubilee Institute, the Information and Research Center, the National Center for Culture and Arts, the National Music Conservatory, Ethmar for Islamic Micro Finance and the Noor Al Hussein Foundation’s Tamweelcom - Jordan Micro Finance Company, the Institute for Family Health, and the Community Development Institute.
